Massachusetts Introduces Non-resident Pharmacy License
The Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy has announced that it will begin requiring the licensure of all non-resident pharmacies dispensing any prescription products into Massachusetts. Applications for the new license type with the state will be accepted on 1/1/2025.
PIC License + Inspections
The board has clarified that the pharmacist in charge for each non-resident pharmacy will need to be licensed in Massachusetts. Inspections will also be required to qualify for licensure.
Who Will Conduct Inspections?
The board has designated Gates Healthcare Associates Inc. and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as the only two current inspectors that can provide Board-approved inspections of facilities.
New Requirements
The board will also now require additional licensure for pharmacies that will fall in the categories of sterile and complex non-sterile compounding. This is in addition to a retail pharmacy license (non-resident drug store).
These facility types will also require inspections under board regulations.
Timeline for Implementation
To give facilities time to accommodate these shifts the board has granted a grace period until 3/31/2025 to apply for the new licensure.
